"make NP sing and dance"

Found in a review of an internet router.

Back in Saint Louis in the '50's, we used to say,

"make NP walk... and talk" [usually spoken with emphatic hesitation]

with the same idea of making some inanimate object yield its highest
performance, whether it be a floor-polisher, a hand at cards, a pair
of dice, or whatever.

All say, "How hard it is that we have to die!"––a strange complaint to
come from the mouths of people who have had to live.
