Farmer & Henley have this from Britain with an 1867 ex. "B flat" seems to
have been earlier.

I was unaware of any U.S. usage till I heard a NYC exterminator on CNN
yesterday or the day before. He had a bedbug-huntin' dog. He said, "Find the
b's, boy!  Find the b's!" a number of times. The reporter even commented on
it.

Maybe he was thinking "bee," but I'll leave that to someone else.
