controversy NOT!

  It has a very distinct meaning (a purported controversy that isn't)
and appears to be a portmanteau. Why would it be a nonce word? And, as
Garson points out, it's novel but not new or unique. Now, if it were a
nuntroversy... ;-)

PS: Actually, I just thought of a recent case that can well be described
as a nuntroversy. Please forgive the lack of full details--working from
memory. A women in a relatively early stage of pregnancy (pre-viable)
was admitted to a Catholic hospital in severe distress. A hospital
committee that included the Catholic ethics adviser to the hospital, a
nun, agreed that termination of pregnancy was the only possible
solution, which is what the doctors did. When the local bishop found out
about the case, he was outraged and immediately excommunicated the nun,
which caused considerable media backlash.
