I have a series of three blog posts on the topic of /t,d/
retroflexion/affrication before /r/, with links to the thread on this list
from January. Herb Stahlke's already been by and commented on the first one.

The phenomenon:

A phonological question: How do you know [tS, dZ] before /r/ are allophones
of /t, d/, and not actually /tS, dS/?

A response to Arnold Zwicky's suggestion that /t/ retroflexion is "a
retroflex fricative version of the aspiration on the /t/."
