Wonderful cites. Prof. Morris was a busy man. Here is a citation in
September of 1885.

Cite: 1885 September 23, Omaha Daily Bee, Page 6, Column 1, Omaha,
Nebraska. (Chronicling America)

The dog and pony show of Prof. Morris drew big houses at the matinee
and at the evening performance yesterday. All who went, old and young,
seemed delighted.

A more colorful metaphor could have been created, but it remained an
unrealized potentiality: dog, monkey, and pony show.

Cite: 1885 June 07, The Sunday Herald, Page 4, Column 2, Washington
D.C. (Chronicling America)

The attraction will be Messrs. Purvis and White's dog, monkey, and
pony show, a combination that drew large audiences all of the past
week. Take the children to see the show by all means.
