"recuse" = "disqualify"

In the NYTimes today, Adam Litpak, who should know better, writes
about the "vaccine case" argued Tuesday before the Supreme Court,
"Justice Elena Kagan was disqualified from the case and was not
present at the argument." [Both NE edition and on-line.]

Kagan of course was not disqualified, she recused herself. And I
believe Supreme Court justices cannot be "disqualified" from any
case; they are free to recuse themselves or not at their own discretion.
