the oncoming slaught

I heard yesterday; "the oncoming slaught of the hurricane."
I think he meant the "onslaught" of the hurricane.

For "onslaught" at thefreedictionary.com, the voices say

USA       = ON-slot  ~aanslaat
UK        =  on-SLAWT  ~aansllaut
speaker icon = ON-slot  ~aanslaat.

The awe-dropping surprises me.
I would have thought ON-slawt  ~aanslaut.
