That "takes the meat!" as we used to say, in the Army. I loved that
column even when Safire was writing it! And then, when Ben took
over... Well, what can I say? To quote the mantra of an old Army
buddy, Ed Turkington - he grew up to retire as a dean from UChi - used
to say, and rightly:

"The world is full of assholes!"
