Possibly a blend of "second nature" and "offhand"?

Here is a 1991 newspaper example:

http://www.nytimes.com/1990/12/16/nyregion/campus-life-penn-state-like-any-other-student-apartment-except-for-dialysis.html?scp=1&sq=%22become+second+hand%22&st=nyt

<<Every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday he visits that piece of equipment
and does what has become second hand: He hooks himself up for kidney
dialysis.>>
