Headline of an ad for Portage _shoes_ for men:

"Where you see the famous _'kicks'_"

The ad features a football motif. So, likely, the use use of "kicks"
in quotes is meant to indicate a non-standard, *punning* use of
_kicks_ for "shoes." IAC, it seems to be another interdatiing of this
use, but earlier than the '50's reference to "brand-new _kicks_."
