"Why is/are phonetics important?"

Would you ask the same question about "economics" or "physics"?
"Statistics" is a bit different because the answer would depend on the
circumstances. If you are talking about the field, it would be "is"; if
about the variables--it'd be "are". Are you tired of such questions
about "data" or "agenda", Tom? At least, there is actually a reason to
consider the issue in those cases (however minor, these days).
