and Black Identity: a Call for a New Historiography_, by William D.
Wright, 2002 (Preview):

The term used in the early nineteenth century was either
Afri-American or "Africo-American," or "Africo- Americans."33 The
name and identity of Afro-American seems to have been a late
nineteenth-century development ...
