Cigarette nuts was Re: 1947 citing in Archie Comic of "butthole." What did it mean?

This reminds me of an eggcorn I've recently spotted, only once so far. There is a sign by the front door of a triple-decker house in our neighborhood that says

Do not throw cigarette nuts on the ground.

So: "cigarette nuts" for "cigarette butts." I have not done my homework and checked the ECDB on this yet.
