If it turns out that Lincoln was NOT born in a log cabin, then Republicans (Log Cabin and otherwise) will be nowhere near as embarrassed as the National Park Service...

[note to myself: should that be "nearly as" or not?  "Near" is not supposed to be an adverb, but "nearly" doesn't sound right to me]

Regarding the recent "surge" of comments on the infelicitous headline about Mr. Lin, the last word on the subject was said by an unlikely person, namely Spiro Agnew:

PR person to Vice President Agnew:  We've got to do something about those chinks in your armor
Agnew:  Please, no ethnic jokes.

Note to anyone who has a datable citation for "nyah nyah etc.":  please inform the OED, since the last time I looked they had an entry but no citations from before 1990.
