Wilson's impression is supported empirically by Tillery, Wilke, and Bailey's (2000) study, "The Nationalization of a Southernism" in Journal of English Linguistics (a damn fine journal that you all should subscribe to and cite articles from in everything you publish).

It's just that, AFAIK, no one with sufficient academic credentials or
