Official statement of  the ultimate cause of death, from the NATSB,

"Pilot error: failed to maintain clearance above terrain."

That is, the pilot, distracted, had allowed his plane to dive
nose-first into the ground at a speed of 270m.p.h. The proximate cause
of death was near-intantaneous deceleration that broke every bone and
destroyed every organ in his body.
