Q: 'dignity"?

In Massachusetts there is a ballot question proposing to permit
"physician-assisted suicide". (Actually, the physician would not
necessarily assist; the proposal rather permits doctors to prescribe
the necessary drugs.) One opponent of the proposal, "pastor of the
First Church in Marlborough, which is affiliated with the United
Church of Christ", is quoted in the Boston Globe as saying "A person
ravaged by disease has no less dignity than Michael Phelps in the
swimming pool. It is not up to us to decide when we go."

What does the Rev. Kazimierz Bem mean by "dignity"?

Joel
