Here's a slight antedating of the common sense of "skyscraper":

1888 _S.F. Chronicle_ 3 June (ProQuest Historical Newspapers)  It may be remarked here that the Board of Trade is surrounded by a group of similar sky-scrapers in the shape of office structures.
