"Violence has peaked its head"

I can't believe nobody has mentioned "poked"!  "poked its head out"
[from the cesspool it should remain buried in, or whatever similar
place you prefer it should not emerge from].

Admittedly the quote in question does not include "out", but by the
time all the previously-cited confusions plus this one have invaded
the writer's brain I'm not surprised it disappeared.
