The OED says that goods are "put up to auction" but does not mention the intransitive "go to auction."

I'm familiar with "go to auction" being used to refer to a manuscript that is bid on by publishing houses for the right to publish. Google shows that real estate, heirlooms, buffalos and other things can go to auction as well.
