OED's word of the day today, "goldendoodle" (OED 23 April 2001)
I've found a 14 March 2001 in Usenet that refers to a website that used it on 8 February 2001, and in turn links to www.goldendoodles.com, which was first registered in 7 January 2001. (The site say it was created in autumn 2000 at a Tripod URL, but I've got no documentary evidence of that.)
14 March 2001, Usenet, rec.pets.dogs.rescue, Catherine Warrick:
Eww, eww, I take it back. I just tried the breed selector at dogbreedinfo.com,
and it suggested that I get the "breed" called "Goldendoodle," and then spewed
some nonsense about how hybrid crosses are healthier than either of the parent
breeds, and less susceptible to genetically-transmitted diseases.
Ugh. Not a useful site.
was nothing in the "breed" description of the Goldendoodle to suggest that the health of both parent lines would need to be considered - just a suggestion that crossbreeds
are naturally healthier.
Plus which, I just object to the silly word "Goldendoodle."
The golden doodle page dogbreedinfo.com was first archived version on 8 February 2001:
The Goldendoodle is a Golden Retriever and Poodle cross. The Goldendoodle gets its name from it's mixed heritage - Golden Retriever and Poodle.
("Goldendoodle" appears on this 8 February 2001 page but not the preceding 9 December 2000 archive:
The Dog Breed Info page also links to the "Goldendoodle Web Site" at http://www.goldendoodles.com, but the first archive is 2 March 2001.
Their contact page says:
My name is Blue Sterling and I'm the webmaster to Goldendoodles.com ... In the Fall of 2000 my family was looking for the perfect dog and through an internet search discovered the Labradoodle. At that time in southern Ontario, Labradoodles were nowhere to be found - but we had Golden Poos! While I was waiting for my two Doods to come home from the breeder I built the Goldendoodle website (all 7 pages of it) and put together the Doodle Discussion Forum to try to meet other Goldendoodle owners.
One of the tools of the Dood community is its forums. The Doodle Discussion Forum was the first forum on the net for Goldendoodle and Labradoodle owners and it was started in January of 2001. The first breeders forum - the Doodle Breeders' Discussion Forum - was created about a year later as a place for all Dood breeders to share information and trade dogs.
The domain goldendoodles.com was registered on 7 January 2001 (before that it had a Tripod URL):
