How toll (rhymes with "doll") are you

The nurse asked "How tall are you.  But she said ~taal not ~taul.  I had her say it twice before I got it.  She said; ~~Hou taaler yue?~~ in a soft quick voice.   Which makes me think - does the tongue go lower when we say "ah" or " awe"?
