“Dictionaries are cautious about attributing a source for it, reasonably so, as there are at least five competing explanations, with no very good evidence for any of them.”

Though not the oldest use of the word, it would be nice to see the lyrics to this song:

"DeKoven Thompson, the composer, threatens to serve papers on Eloise Johnson Bennett for using the song, 'Copasetic Papa,' at the Grand theatre last week.  The song is a number in his Melodyland operatic musical comedy.”
