Freemium

There have been all sorts of portmanteau involving "free" and/or "software"
and related terms, perhaps starting with "shareware" and "freeware", but
this is one of the rare instances of "freemium", which seems to be much
more frequent with cell phone apps than with full-range computers. This
despite the fact that premium add-on services have been a feature of
shareware for decades.

>From TechCrunch:

"The full machine learning keyboard technology, which adapts to its users'
use of language so it can better predict their next likely words, is now
free, with additional customization options offered as in-app purchases to
pay for the switch. So SwiftKey is basically going freemium."
