Very likely. It's mentioned in the German stuff from DE W:pedia, for which
I lazily didn't bother to provide a cite, that "Sand" is among the German
synonyms of "Augenbutter."

Another German synonym is _Matzel_, which is reminiscent of
"mattel"?/"mattle"?, an ETX BE term used for the still-viscous predecessor
of cat-butter that often oozes out of the corners of a person's eyes while
he still awake.
