Your hypothesis is that the object of a preposition or verb being two or more pronouns rather than one changes the rules.

>From a Boston Globe column titled "NFL Notebook" and attributed to the Associated Press, about NY Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul's amputation of his right index finger after a fireworks accident:

General manager Jerry Reese said in a radio interview that "it was  personal conversation, and I want to keep it private between him and I."
