OED and HDAS have axe/ax as a musical instrument (saxophone) from 1955.
Listed in Billboard 3/23/1946 p 33 is the single by Kai Winding (Savoy 590) "Grab Your Axe, Max".  From the description, the title may be referring to jazz muscian Winding's instrument, a trombone.
