Back in the day, when one began with the use of "one," one used "one"
throughout and one finished with the use of "one."

The intermediate stage was, no doubt, the unfortunate, neologistic use of
"... one(1) ... _he(1)_ ..." by the pswaydo-literate, thereby introducing
the gender "problem" into one - the only one? - of the few traditional
structures designed specifically to avoid it.
