[Ads-l] "Vocal fry": much ado about nothing

I don't see "vocal fry" in the OED, indeed I don't see a noun entry for "fry" in any relevant sense in the OED.  Am I missing something?

In a quick search of JSTOR, I see occurrences of "vocal fry" as old as 1963, although these may be in a different sense.
