Yes, a bit of an oxymoron.  Alternative onomastic speculations: Maybe poor Roger was just nearsighted. Or he had just been misinformed about the nature of the hymen.  Either way, it's not surprising his line has died out; there are vanishingly few individuals of his surname to be found in even the larger phone books.
