More on *shipper*... Jeff Prucher's *Oxford Dictionary of Science Fiction*
(a.k.a. *Brave New Words*) (ISBN 9780195305678) has an entry for the noun
*shipper*, but no entry for either a noun or verb *ship *or *shipping *in
the sense at hand. Prucher's quotations for this word in this sense go back
to 1996. Note the apostrophe used with *shipper *in the early uses. Also
note that all quotations save the 1999 one refer to X-Files.

shipper *n*. (abbr. of *relationshipper*) a fan (of a TV show, book series,
etc.) who favors a romantic or sexual relationship between two of the
characters.

[1996 NEW: TITLE 17 [1/1] (Usenet: alt.tv.x-files.creative) Apr. 19 I think
that everyone, both R'shipper's and Non R'shipper's alike, can enjoy this
story.]

1996 DD on Frasier (Usenet: alt.tv.x-files) May 7 David Duchovny was
guest-voice “Tom” on Last [sic] night's Frasier. (courtesy of the ‘shippers
list).

1996 My problem with “anti-relationshippers” (Usenet: alt.tv.x-files) May
22 The idea of portraying more of the emotional connection between these
two characters, be it romantically or platonically, I would think appeals
to all of us. Being a shipper, I of course prefer the idea that they would
be expressing their epic love, but….

1999 For all you other D/T fans (Usenet: alt.fan.brent-spiner) Aug. 26
Okay, I'm a closet Data/Tasha ‘shipper.

2002 New York Times (letter) (June 2) 4/2 One it became generally accepted
that Mulder and Scully were romantically involved off screen […] the
shippers lamented not being allowed to witness the transition in the
relationship.
