1861, in Morgan Wolfe Merrick _From Desert to Bayou_ (El Paso: Texas
Western Press, 1991) 17: The old chief Espejo came in with the crowd. One
often hears said [sic] that the Indians love fire water (Whisky), well this
old chief loves it. The sutler gave him a large tumbler full of pretty bad
whisky, and the old guy put it to his lips & never took it down until he
drained it.
