WB:  No nasal spread here. Italian <casamatta> being far in the past, this
obscure <-mate> looks like a [+human] homonym, leading to reinterpretation
as the high-frequency [-ment] suffix, as in <casement window>; cf. somewhat
semantically relevant <basement>.
