Untold Stories of the ER

A young woman has a steel rod in her skull - she stuck her head out of a
car-window and was hit by something that had broken aloose from the truck
in front - that may be affecting her vision. The doctor holds up three
fingers and asks, "How many fingers do you see?" She answers, "Three."

The doctor comments:

"She can still _finger-count_. That's a good sign."

Jerry Springer

A young, *white* woman says to her baby daddy:

"You are a [EI] *_lie_*! You are *such* a *_lie_*!"

Use of _lie_ instead of _liar_ in this construction is usual in BE.
Heretofore, I'd assumed - from childhood, in fact - that this was a simple
clip of the word-final [-@]. However, hearing "lie" used in place of "liar"
by r-ful, sE-speaking, ordinary, working-class, white folk requires an
agonizing re-appraisal.

All say, "How hard it is that we have to die!"---a strange complaint to
come from the mouths of people who have had to live.
