“One of a number of rectangular pieces (usually 28) of ivory, bone, or wood, having the under side black, and the upper equally divided by a cross line into two squares, each either blank or marked with pips” (Compact Edition of The Oxford English Dictionary)

The above definition seems awfully specific.  Ones of other materials like plastic, ones without a black side, ones without a cross line, ones in shapes other than rectangular (Tri-omono, Bendomino, etc.), and ones marked with things other than pips ( http://www.domino-play.com/TypeWithoutSpots.htm ) would appear not to fit it.

There’s also rectangular pieces that are blank and lack lines and pips, the kind used for domino toppling :
