OED explains: "Alteration of _own_ v., perhaps originating in a typing
error (the letters o and p being adjacent on a standard computer keyboard)."

OED says it's pronounced like "pone" -- but there's a fair amount of
variation in both pronunciation and spelling, as discussed here:
