And for an earlier British example, there’s this: J.S. Hobbs, FRGS, The British Channel Pilot, from the Downs to Bristol, London, 1859. By J. S. Hobbs. Hobbs uses the term British Channel 86 times in this navigtion guide, according to Google Books.
