Instead of downloading an app from the Google Play store, some Android apps can be installed on a mobile device by downloading to a computer and then installing onto the mobile device. That is called “sideloading”.

Although apps cannot generally be sideloaded onto Apple devices, developers can sideload their unpublished apps from Xcode (the iOS development software) on a computer onto a mobile device.
