A different take on "chain migration":

Trump routinely, unfairly attacks our family-based immigration system by  using "chain migration" and citing completely unrelated events involving immigrants as justification to target, harass and criminalize immigrants of color. To make matters worse -- the media spreads this inaccurate and harmful talking point every day. This week, normalizing hateful rhetoric like "chain migration" when the immigration debate -- with the lives of thousands of immigrant families at stake -- hits national news and the public eye is dangerous indeed. 

"Chain migration" is not responsible reporting. Sign the petition: Media outlets must end the use of “chain migration” in all news reporting.

The use of “chain migration” in several media outlets has reached unprecedented levels. Prior to the Trump administration, “chain migration” was hardly ever used in any serious news reporting. Now the term has been reported to have been used over 300 times on several media outlets.

It has become very clear. The ascent of Donald Trump into the White House has ushered in a new wave of hateful, ugly and dangerous rhetoric. If Trump succeeds, he will be one step closer to ending immigration from Black and Brown countries and fulfilling his white nationalist fantasies.

We must push back on the new normal Trump is trying to create. 

Nearly 69% of Black immigrants come to the United States through family sponsorship or the diversity visa lottery system. It is without question -- Black immigrants are particularly vulnerable under this administration. From the Muslim ban to Trump’s hateful statements about Nigerian and Haitian immigrants, Trump will not stop until he completely dismantles family-based immigration and the diversity visa lottery system.

Tell the Media: “Chain Migration” is derogatory and should no longer be used in any way. 

Family sponsorship has always been a pillar of immigration policy, especially for Black people. The Civil Rights Act of 1965 was passed in tandem with the Immigration and Naturalization Act - a law that ended a quota system based on country of origin but instead prioritizes family reunification. Through this landmark piece of legislation, immigrants from Black countries could finally come to the United States. 

The media’s continued use of harmful language about immigrant families is the first step in creating policies and legislation that will wreak havoc on Black and Brown immigrant communities. Trump and his officials' constant attack on Black and Brown immigrant communities know no bounds.  In Trump’s first year alone, administrative officials have made several attempts to end standard immigration policy that has been in place for decades. 

“Chain migration” dehumanizes immigrant families. New reporters and journalists shouldn't embrace right-wing, racist, anti-immigrant rhetoric.

We know immigration is a Black issue. And the impact will be felt by Black people everywhere. It is time to put an end to the widespread use of an illegitimate term that does not honor the role immigrants play in our communities.
