On 22 May, the The Wall Street Journal published "Anger Over Tourists Swarming Vacation Hot Spots Sparks Global Backlash” (https://on.wsj.com/2LoORG4 <https://on.wsj.com/2LoORG4> by Rachel Pannett), in which the problems of excess tourism are explored.

In Venice, Barcelona, Thailand and New Zealand, ‘overtouristing’ is straining local infrastructure and prompting restrictions; the ‘Lord of the Rings’ effect

Since last summer’s Europe protests, the industry has made “overtourism” a focus…. Overtourism was also a theme in March at ITB Berlin, a major industry convention.

Thailand said in March it would close Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi Leh, an island where Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Beach” was filmed, from June to September because overtouristing was damaging the marine environment.

In the Telegraph (20 April, "Dear dictionaries, this is why 'overtourism' should be your 2018 word of the year"), Greg Dickinson (https://bit.ly/2qOPfUx <https://bit.ly/2qOPfUx>) says that Collins has the only available definition of “overtourism” because he wrote it by way of suggestion. He also provides some of the history of the word, saying it was first defined by Rafat Ali in August 2016.
