<Sweet'N Low> ~ sweetener
I can recall a time when the Great Sugar Scare caused me to ask for
artificial stuff to sweeten my coffee instead of sugar (California '70s).
And the cafés put out packets of Sweet'N Low. And they were free, so they
never missed a few extra for home use. Anyways, my hypothesis, which just
occurred to me, is that Sweet'N Low was the first of its kind (since the
Germans pushed saccharin back in WWI), and was sorta like <xerox>
'photocopy' in inducing a similar-sounding generic designation <sweetener>,
after other saccharine products hit the eateries.
