When I was a student in France I ate at the university restaurant (dorm food is dorm food is dorm food, but we did get things like braised leeks...) - we would buy books of tickets at some very (VERY) low price of a franc and a half or something like that and turn in a ticket for each meal.

Got a letter from a local charity soliciting donations to allow for the
provision of _meal-tickets_ to the poor. Didn't know that "meal-ticket" had
a literal meaning.
