The new science fossil fuel companies fear
Zack Colman

This citation provides citations that led the way to the coinage of “attribution science”.

####
In 2003, the science journal Nature published an article by Oxford University scientist Myles Allen titled “Liability for climate change.” Allen wondered aloud how to solve “the attribution problem” to demonstrate precisely how much burning fossil fuels were responsible for worsening climate-linked developments….

A year later, Allen and colleagues Dáithí Stone, Peter Stott and Mark Hawkins published the first “extreme event attribution” study. Using computer models, they compared human-caused, post-Industrial Revolution emissions with scenarios lacking such emissions, known as natural variability….

The Bulletin of the American Metereological Society began publishing annual event attribution analyses in 2011.

How Do We Know that Humans Are the Major Cause of Global Warming?

This appears spuriously as a 1997 Google hit at https://tinyurl.com/yyxl9v4j <https://tinyurl.com/yyxl9v4j>. It is at the end of a PDF of "Introduced Species: A Significant Component of Human-Caused Global Change”. The original article can be downloaded at https://newzealandecology.org/nzje/j21_1 <https://newzealandecology.org/nzje/j21_1> and doesn’t contain the citation:

Although attribution science is clearer for some types of events than for others, it is an important step to provide predictive forecasts of extreme events at longer lead times, reducing risks and improving preparedness.
