 I think I wrote years ago  that when I was in college and was informed
that Americans there were who said  / hw /, I couldn't believe it.

I assumed that if it were true, then only the most extreme Bostonians could
be involved.

I make no spoken distinction between whale and wail. When I lived in New
York, I never noticed anyone else doing it either.
