SYLLABLE STRESS IN US ENGLISH

This analysis of the top 5k words of US English shows that for a typical document (books, magazines, and newspapers) the words break down like this.

   73% of words are one-syllable

   19% have stress on 1st syllable

    8% have stress on other than first the syllable

Note that 71% of multi-syllable words have stress on the 1st syllable.  A previous estimate was 90%
