[Ads-l] Antedating of "Journalist"

Let me try to explain what is going on. I am aware of the fact that the incomplete citations I have been posting are not that informative, and I apologize for that. I discover a lot of antedatings, far more than anyone else (other than the staff of the OED) has ever discovered. I do my best to preserve the information by sending the antedatings (usually with very full details) to the OED and to ADS-L. The antedatings for which I don't give full information are probably somewhat annoying to the OED and to ADS-Lers.

The reason why I sometimes give incomplete information is that I am an unusually busy person, with a responsible full-time job, a lot of family obligations, a bunch of health problems, and many scholarly projects such as the Yale Book of Quotations. I just don't have time to always dot the i's and cross the t's. My recent batch of antedatings is deriving from my realization that I had a fair number of significant antedatings from 5 to 10 years ago that I never sent to the OED or ADS-L. My options are either to do the work to fill in the details or to preserve the antedatings by sending them on as is, and I have chosen the latter course of action. I appreciate the forebearance of those on this list who put up with my clogging their inboxes.

Hi Fred! Great work with the latest batch of antedatings. Any reason you're not giving the actual citation text for a lot of these? Especially for those who don't have EEBO or the other databases you're using, the posts aren't hugely informative.

Best,
Ben
