I believe that Pei was somewhat conservative in political outlook--not

hardly Nazi or such at all, but given the prevailing political bent of

most linguists I suspect that his views, coupled with a general distrust

of 'popularized' portrayals of a field led to his being

undervalued.  I also loved his books in junior high and high school,

and was primed to become a linguist (although taking my first linguistics

class from H. A. Gleason himself didn't hurt either...)<br><br>
