<DIV>I was under the impression that a "Value-Added Tax" was one which was paid to the government somewhere along the supply chain before the article reached the final purchaser, and therefore in included in the posted purchase price. On the other hand, a "Sales Tax" is one which is collected by the final seller, and is in addition to the posted purchase price. That is, a Value-Added Tax would be invisible to the final purchaser (although sometimes it would be listed in fine print). </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>However, you describe a 7% VAT plus a 7% Provincial tax as something the purchaser has to add to the posted price. Obviously I don't understand what a VAT is. Can you help me?</DIV>

<DIV>OT: In Australia I was going over my rental-car bill and noticed a "Stamp Tax", which I asked the clerk about. She asked, "Don't you have a Stamp Tax in the States?" I had to explain to her that the Stamp Tax was the reason we were the "States" and not part of the Commonwealth. (Actually the US does have stamp taxes, only they are called "excise taxes".)</DIV>

<DIV>Aside to Doug Harris: an accountant formerly with the Air Reduction Company told me the joke about "The company is in trouble. They’re liquidating [or liquifying] their assets and their inventory is thin air."</DIV>

<DIV>(Totally off topic) A local elementary school teacher tried out some well-known proverbs on her kids, giving the first part and making them fill in the rest. The results: </DIV>
<DIV>Don't change horses---until they stop running. </DIV>
<DIV>Strike while---the bug is close. </DIV>
<DIV>Don't bite the hand---that looks dirty. </DIV>
<DIV>A penny saved---is not much. </DIV>
