I hope someone on the ADS list got this request, but if not, let's help
the BBC get our dialect history right! Pitch in, everyone--the AAAL
knows nothing about this! BTW, note that they expect to need only a
"short phone conversation." Yeah, sure.

Dear Robert -
I'm a researcher with BBC Radio, and I'm
wondering if you might be able to help us out with a project I'm working
on. We are producing a 90-part series on the history of the United
States, from pre-colonial days until the present day. In addition
to narration by the noted Cambridge historian David Reynolds, we are also
including letters, journals, diary excerpts and other writings from early
Americans and other contemporary citizens. These will be read by
actors, and in the interested of authenticity we would like to get a
general idea of how the early Americans spoke, and how their accents were
different to or similar to modern American and British
pronounciation. I'm trying to find an academic or researcher who
might be able to briefly advise us on this matter - the time commitment
would be minimal, as I all I would be looking for is a short phone
conversation or direction to the relevant web/internet resources.

I would appreciate it if you could circulate
this among your members, and do feel free to give out my contact details
as listed below. Thank you very much for your time.
