1) My theory is that roots themselves are organized into families, e.g.
here *pu-l, *pu-r, *pu-n, *pu-ng (etc. ?).
2) Internal comparison and "external" comparison are two different and
complementary techniques.
3) If the Tagalog root *pun isolated from the list I gave is wrong, prove
it.
4) Jap. _champon_ and Oki. _champuru_ seem to be of Austronesian origin,
and, if so, were probably borrowed from two different sources as whole
disyllabic words - not as roots.
